Google copies Yahoo! on image copyright

By Charles-Henry Ruyant

Few months after Yahoo!, Google has set up a new copyright filter on its image search. This option allows the user to select a picture free of copyright.

The only way to have access to this option is via the advanced image search, which is not very user friendly.

This function is obviously good and simple but this is clearly not an original idea, they seem to have copied the idea from Yahoo! They don’t even add anything to it.

Google has infuriated Microsoft this week with the Google O.S. and today, they have probably irritated Yahoo! by replicating their function.

Google are definitely trying to kill off the competition… and I am not sure that Yahoo! can take it. Between Bing and Google the chances of Yahoo’s continuing success are minimal.

Google is the new Microsoft

By Charles-Henry Ruyant

Ten years ago, Google used to be a nice little search engine. People liked Google for its independence and its different way of seeing the world (or at least Internet). In contrast, Microsoft ten years ago was the big corporation which wanted to control everything.

Today Microsoft is not so omnipresent anymore and doesn’t really annoy anyone. Google has still a got a good reputation and people still like them but I think that it going to change soon. Effectively, over the past three years Google has created these additional services: search engine, email, calendar, YouTube, phone, internet software, and now the new Operation System (O.S.) for computer.

Google Everywhere

They have done the opposite of Microsoft – starting via the internet to finally producing some software. Google has different strategy to Microsoft by trying to make its products free. It will be the same with this new O.S.

How very generous of them?…I’m not so convinced. A few months ago some senior Google managers decided they wanted to increase profits. Do you remember YouTube’s (owned by Google), new ads on the videos?. .. Google generally offers the latest innovations for free, but they almost all always come with advertising.

So when Google announced that they are going to develop a O.S. for free, I cant help but wonder where they are going to add some adverts to this nice O.S. or how there are going to make some money with this service.

Or maybe I am totally wrong and Google want to get back at Microsoft after they went after Google’s primary market (with Microsoft’s new search engine – Bing).

And to be honest, I starting to be tired of seeing Google everywhere…

Yahoo! Pad

By Charles-Henry Ruyant

Yahoo! launches the new online pad. The principle is simple; if you are doing some research on a specific topic on Yahoo! (for example: vacation in Hawaii, new mobile phone…) after a few searches on the same subject, Yahoo! will suggest that you open its pad.

The Yahoo pad is organised by websites visited and you can add comments about each of these websites, you can also make general comments not relevant to any of the websites.

It is a nice idea to take notes when you research online, but to be honest it is pretty useless. Primarily, to use it you need to have a Yahoo account and activate it. After few searches on Yahoo about mobile phones and Rio de Janeiro, Yahoo didn’t give me the option of opening the pad! .. Really annoying, you cannot open this pad whenever you want or need to…

Also this pad doesn’t offer a lot more than a simple Notepad (from Windows) just a better presentation. I do not see the big advantage or value of this tool.

Yahoo should focus more time on its search engine algorithm or useful functions than little gadgets that nobody is going to use.

Search Engine Reputation Management and Images

By Charles-Henry Ruyant

Most of you know the classic search engine reputation management (SERM) format which makes sure that the ten first results (first page) on the search engine result page are neutral or positive.

Ordinarily search engine reputation management is for brand terms such as ‘Nike’, ‘RBS bank ’, and ‘AXA Insurance’…

A lot of companies look at the first page of Google and try to control the ten first results with other corporate and social media websites. Below we can see that McDonald’s did a pretty good job managing the first Google results page.

The majority of these companies don’t ever look at search engine image result page where some malicious picture can be posted against them.

As far as I am aware there is no tool that can monitor the Google search image result page. It has been so far disregarded by search engine reputation management professional/ companies.

It is why some of the largest companies have some negative image result and it doesn’t look like they do anything about it or even that they are aware of it.

The worst thing is that it is easier to clear/manage your search image result page that your actual search engine result page (web result). With few SEO tricks on images, you can manage the problem in a couple of weeks.

Maybe a new product to develop ;)
